Signs this is happening to you
- Emails "from" your own address in your inbox or junk folder.
- Messages saying your account was hacked, asking for money.
- Warnings that your mailbox is full or about to close.
- Colleagues getting odd emails "from" each other.
How can I get an email from myself?
Anyone can write your address in the "from" line of an email. It's like writing your home address on the back of an envelope. It doesn't mean the letter came from your house.
Scammers do this because people trust their own name. An email from "you" gets opened.
Have I been hacked?
Most of the time, no. Emails that say "I have your password, pay me" are a scare tactic sent to millions of people. They are counting on you to panic.
Still, if anything feels wrong, change your password and turn on the extra sign-in step your email company offers. It costs nothing.
Why does it get through at all?
Because nothing is telling the inbox to turn it away. Your own email settings decide whether a fake that uses your name is delivered or stopped. If they don't speak up, the fake can get in, to you and to everyone else.
What we find that others miss
These are small things. Each one is enough to send your email to spam, or let a fake through.
- A spare web address you own but don't use, which a scammer can use to send email that looks like yours.
- Two settings that each look right on their own, but cancel each other out, so neither one works.
- One wrong letter that makes a whole setting count for nothing.
- Part of your web address, like news.yourcompany.com, that is less safe than the rest.
