Someone is sending email in your name

A customer forwards you an email "from you" that you never sent. Or you start getting replies to messages you never wrote. Someone is using your name.

Signs this is happening to you

  • Customers ask about emails you never sent.
  • Replies arrive to messages you never wrote.
  • Your inbox fills with "not delivered" notes for strangers' emails.
  • Someone tells you they got a strange invoice or link from you.

How can someone send email from my address?

Putting your business name and email address on a fake email takes no skill at all. Unless your settings tell the world's inboxes to turn such email away, much of it can get through, looking just like yours.

Your customers trust your name. That trust is exactly what the scammer is using.

Have they broken into my email?

Usually not. They don't need your password. They just write your address on their email, the way anyone can write any return address on a letter. That is why changing your password doesn't stop it.

Why don't most businesses know it's happening?

The fake email doesn't pass through your mailbox. You don't see it. The only people who see it are the ones it fools.

The big email companies do keep count of every email sent in your name, real or fake. But unless you have set things up to receive those reports, and can read them, that warning goes nowhere.

What we find that others miss

These are small things. Each one is enough to send your email to spam, or let a fake through.
